In French, « l’imparfait » is used to describe a scene or habits in the past.
- Il faisait beau, les oiseaux chantaient, des gens se promenaient dans le parc. (scene)
- Ma grand-mère faisait des confitures, et on allait pêcher avec mon grand-père. (habits)
To construct the imperfect, add the correct ending to the correct form of the verb…

1) Correct ending

Listen to how it’s pronounced and repeat:
Notice how all the forms are pronounced the same except nous chantions et vous chantiez.
Listen to another example :
Je vivais, Tu vivais, Il/Elle/On vivait, Nous vivions, Vous viviez, Ils/Elles vivaient.
2) Correct form of the verb
You need to use the verb as conjugated with nous in the present but without ons:

3) Funny stuff
- There is one exception : le verbe être. Écoutez, répétez, apprenez:
J’étais, Tu étais, Il/Elle/On était, Nous étions, Vous étiez, Ils/Elles étaient
- Verbs which already had an i now have ii :
Étudier : J’étudiais, Tu étudiais, Il/Elle/On étudiait, Nous étudiions, Vous étudiiez, Ils/Elles étudiaient.
Crier : Je criais, Tu criais, Il/Elle/On criait, Nous criions, Vous criiez, Ils/Elles criaient.
