French Irregular verbs

There are many so-called irregular verbs in French. Fortunately the vast majority follow the same logic for endings: S, S, T, ONS, EZ, ENT.

As usual the S and the T are not pronounced. The ONS and EZ are pronounced. The letter before ENT is also pronounced (but not ENT itself).

for example

Partir (to leave):

Je pars, tu pars, il/elle/on part, nous partons, vous partez, ils/elles partent.

Lire (to read):

Je lis, tu lis, il/elle/on lit, nous lisons, vous lisez, ils/elles lisent.

Voir (to see):

Je vois, tu vois, il/elle/on voit, nous voyons, vous voyez, ils/elles voient.

  • Sometimes the T will be replaced with a D

Prendre (to take)

Je prends, tu prends, il/elle/on prend, nous prenons, vous prenez, ils/elles prennent.

Perdre (to lose)

Je perds, tu perds, il/elle/on perd, nous perdons, vous perdez, ils/elles perdent.

  • Sometimes the S will be replaced with an X

Pouvoir (can)

Je peux, tu peux, il/elle/on peut, nous pouvons, vous pouvez, ils/elles peuvent.
